කසඳුන් යනු ශ්රී ලංකාව හා දකුණු ආසියාව පුරා ඉතා ගෞරවනීය ස්ථානයක් හිමි රතු සඳුන් ගසේ නාමයයි. සුදු සඳුන් මෙන් නොව, රතු සඳුන් ගස දුර්ලභ බවෙන් හා ස්වභාවික ගැඹුරු රතු-දුඹුරු පැහැයෙන් කැපී පෙනේ. පුරාණ ශ්රී ලංකාවේ රාජකීය ගෘහ භාණ්ඩ, ශුද්ධ ස්ථාන සඳහා ආරාධනා භාණ්ඩ සහ දේව මළු අලංකරණය සඳහා මෙම ලීය විශේෂයෙන් භාවිතා විය. බෞද්ධ ශාසනයේ දී කසඳුන් තෙල් හා ලෙලි ශුද්ධකරණ ධාර්මිකත්වය සංකේතවත් කළේය. පුතෙකුට "කසඳුන්" යැයි නම් දීම, ඔහු ජීවිත ගමනේ දී රතු සඳුනේ ගුණාංගයන් — ස්ථිර බව, සියුම් සුවඳ, හා කිසිදු ආඩම්බරයකින් තොරව ප්රකාශ වන ස්වාභාවික වටිනාකම — රැගෙන ජීවත් වේවා යන ප්රාර්ථනාවයි.
Red sandalwood — kasandun in Sinhala — is one of the most prized natural materials in South Asian tradition. Unlike white sandalwood, red sandalwood carries a deep, earthy richness that made it a symbol of rarity and worth across ancient Sri Lanka and India. It was traded as a luxury commodity, used to craft royal furnishings, sacred temple objects, and instruments of worship. In Buddhist ceremony, its paste was applied as a mark of reverence, and its dense, fragrant wood was believed to carry purifying, protective energy. To name a son Kasandun is to wish upon him the qualities of this treasured wood — enduring strength, quiet fragrance, and an intrinsic worth that needs no embellishment.
